The institutions want us to think that we have the power, but of course that is one of the all-time great fallacies. YOU are in control of what happens to YOU. No one else. I am here to tell you that this is only half-true. There is certainly much about your existence (now, of course, I am speaking entirely from an upper-middle-class-Caucasian-American perspective here) that is in your hands, but there is a great deal that is not. Do not be so naive as to think that the whole bootstraps and pulling up thing is true. It is only half so. Remember that a good coffee buzz can go a long way, until it runs out and you get more and then the half life thing takes over and the ability to write the next Of Mice and Men goes away as quickly as it arrived. All in a morning’s time. All in an hour on some days.
